Sony has just announced the PlayStation Vita TV; it’s based on the Vita’s hardware and plays Vita games, as well as anything compatible with our favourite handheld. This tiny box (6.5cm x 10.5cm) offers access to entertainment services too, though most of the ones listed are Japan-exclusive. PlayStation 4 streaming functionality – utilizing a second TV without having to move the console – is also present, making this a must-buy for anyone wanting more options for gaming without all the work.

It supports output at 480p, 720p and 1080i resolution and it’ll cost about 9,480 yen (around $100 USD) when released in Japan on November 14th (no word on pricing or release elsewhere).

A separate bundle including a DualShock 3 and 8GB memory card is priced at 14,280 yen (about $145).

love it, need it in my life.

Not for me as I’m looking forward to remote play on PS4 with my Vita but insanely cheap and can dre a bundle with PS4 costing the same or not much more than the XBone.

Only thing I can’t get my head round is how some games would play. The Dual Shock 4 touch screen is tiny compared to the Vita and I can see big problems with a few games (though not many). DJMAX Technika TUNE being the best example.

  • Not all PS Vita games are playable so says the press release. Kind of negates the main lure of it.

Remote play on an alternative tv could be handy.

    • Jonathan Harding-Rathbone

Imagine if Sony somehow got it to work with one of them smart touch TV’s though! DJMAX on a 40 inch TV. I can dream at least :p

    • Kyle Wakeling

I assume anything that NEEDS a touchscreen or touchpad won’t be supported. If it can be mapped to a button, you’re golden. This is just an assumption, though – might just be random. lol

Maybe when the PS4 drops, the DS4 will be compatible to play the touchscreen games.

  • WhyWai

I would prefer it to just stream my Vita screen to TV.. mehh… Sony! whyyyy?

  • I really hate TGS for shit like this I want this mainly to play ps4 games remotely on another TV in a different room but its not going to be available here at launch. The rest of the world has more use for this since we will all have ps4 along with vita/psp.

A great addition to the suddenly growing Vita hardware family. Quite the genius move to make it the method by which the PS4 will execute remote play. If priced right, it should prove to be very attractive to PS4 owners. Could be this is where all of the PS4/Vita bundle rumours stem from? Wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see a $500 PS4/Vita TV bundle somewhere dowm the line.

As I’ve said it’s a great idea, but current Vita owners shoud not have to buy this. Seeing that the Vita will be able to remote play PS4 games, would be nice if the unit had a HDMI and video out of it’s own. Then you could play PS4 and Vita games on any TV in the house. Using the Vita as your conrroler for Vita games would allow you full access to the entire library as you would have use of the Vita’s native capabilites.

Kind of an odd choice to have a PS3 Dualshock as the pack in.Wouldn’t you lose some functionally for PS4 games? Maybe it’s an issue of cost. Hopfully it’s compatible with the PS4 Dualshock.

That’s pretty amazing actually. It just sucks that you can’t play all games, IE: touch controlled ones. Still, there were a ton of PSP games that I’d love to play on a tv (Patapon, I’m looking at you). I sure hope that they update it’s firmware to come up with something that makes up for the lack of certain games. I mean, Uncharted Golden Abyss had you rubbing quite a few things out (tee-hee) for gameplay. It’s be a shame to not see that displayed on my Sony TV. Maybe they’ll make it so you can play the games using your vita, just when it comes to touch-based sections, look down? Hmm… won’t work for everything though. Sad.

It’s already sold out on Amazon JP.

    Incredible!
