PlayStation Vita hits Sound Shapes and Thomas Was Alone have both been nominated for the annual GameCity Prize. Game City is an annual event held in English city of Nottingham that celebrates the joy of the gaming culture at large, even going by the moniker of “the world’s friendliest videogame festival”. In 2011 the inclusive festival made a significant addition by launching the GameCity Prize.

The award is delivered annually to the creator(s) of “exceptional games”, which are voted upon by an expert panel of judges from various walks of creative life. This year the list includes journalist Samira Ahmed (Teacher),  Phil Beadle (Author and Journalist). Louise Brealey (Actress and Journalist); Dinos Chapman (Artist), Tabitha Jackson (the Head of Arts Commissioning at Channel 4); and Uta Frith (Professor). The winner of the GameCity Prize will be announced during a special event which is to be held in November.

Here is this years short list for the GameCity Prize:

  • FIFA 13 (EA)
  • FTL: Faster Than Light (Subset Games)
  • The Last of Us (Naughty Dog)
  • Sound Shapes (SCEE)
  • Spaceteam (Sleeping Beast Games)
  • Thomas Was Alone (Mike Bithell)
  • XCOM: Enemy Unknown (2K)

“I think this is one of the most exciting shortlists we’ve had so far, and a very tough jury. This year we’ve been thinking a lot about how to create some real value from the GameCity Prize, and these exciting announcements are just the start of that process. affirmed Gamecity festival director Iain Simons We’re really looking forward to learning the identity of the winning title, and being able to share our latest plans for the Prize at the end of November” – Simons concluded.

It’s great to see both Sound Shapes and Thomas Was Alone mentioned in an admittedly impressive list of games, further proof that there are some quality games to be found on PlayStation Vita.
