Break out the champagne because according to figures from Media Create, the PlayStation Vita has surpassed one-million units sold year-to-date in Japan.

Our beloved PS Vita has had an admittedly rocky existence in the West, but has managed to carve out a name for itself in Japan – a land where portables are king. Just recently the Vita managed to outsell the Wii U in Japan, ¬†even with a boost from Nintendo’s iconic plumber.

The figures are YTD and conclude on December 1, 2013, as such do not account for the many Christmas sales that are sure to come later this month.

Only? Or should I say finally? I understand the mobile gaming market share is highly dominate to the tablet and cell phones scene. Highly dominate l, but those are just time passers. I can’t believe that its not more popular. I remember a time when I worked in New York City and everytime I rode the subway to work and back all I could see is PAP’s in every 4th person’s hands.

If only this was old news in the west (US) long ago and we were celebrating the 10th million Vita sold worldwide, then I’d bring up the champagne. Vita still needs to play catch up not only with newcomers but also with the Devs. Not everybody is onboard, you know that. This will be well accepted between Japanese developers, American ones just don’t care. Still, good news. Please Sony keep this up.
