Following the suspension of a 14-year ban on foreign developed gaming consoles in China, many have speculated whether the big three console manufacturers would explore the previously untapped market; and in the case of Sony it looks as though they will weigh their options before making a final decision.
Speaking with Reuters Japan, a spokesperson from Sony confirmed the company’s possible interest in exploring the newly formed, and lucrative landscape.
“The Chinese market has been recognized as promising, so we’ll continue to explore the possibilities.”
One aspect of the potentially fruitful Chinese market that is sure to deter console manufacturers is the country’s high-level of piracy. However it should be noted that modern PlayStation consoles have been among the most secure in recent years, and as a result piracy may not play as large a role in determining Sony’s possible entry to market; as it would with some of its competitors.
