According to “reliable sources” close to IGN, SCE Santa Monica Studio has been hit with a rash of layoffs, culminating in the cancellation of at least one of the studio’s projects.

The Sony-owned and exclusive developer has had a storied history since being founded in 1999, creating PlayStation titles like God of War, as well as collaborating with other studios to develop such notable games as Flower and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale.

At the moment very little is known regarding the fallout and repercussions.

We will keep you updated as this situation develops.

In response to the report, a representitive from Sony issued a statement to IGN that confirmed the layoffs.

“SCEA can confirm that we have completed a reduction in workforce at Santa Monica Studio. This is a result of a cycle of resource re-alignment against priority growth areas within SCE WWS. We do not take these decisions lightly. However, sometimes it is necessary to make changes to better serve the future projects of the studio. We have offered outplacement services and severance packages to ease transition for those impacted.”

Our thoughts go out to those affected by the layoffs.

That’s certainly really odd. Wasn’t this internal team the one that got moved to a bigger location a few months ago, was it? If so, why firing a part of the team right after relocating?

How sad. Hopefully it’s part of a cycle that will lead to ramping up in Vita specialist developers perhaps?
