Colin Walsh, founder of Celsius Game Studios, took to the PlayStation Blog today to announce that the space exploration game Drifter is heading to PS Vita. Drawing inspiration from classic space adventure games like Privateer and Starflight, Drifter (not to be confused with Hyper Light Drifter) is an open world exploration game that places the player in a randomly generated galaxy that stretches 100,000 light years across.

The player is given a ship, a handful of cash, and the rest is up to you. Want to mine minerals and sell them for cash? Go for it. You can take on the role of a trader, bounty hunter, or the pirate being hunted.  You are the captain of your own spaceship and your destiny.

According to Walsh, “In addition to this huge sandbox to play in Drifter will also feature a hand crafted series of story missions which will the player can embark upon to both advance their character as well as learn more about the backstory of the Drifter universe.”

The game will be releasing on both the PS Vita and PS4. No date or pricing has been announced, but it shouldn’t be too long before Drifter flies onto the Vita.

Looks super cool, hope it comes out real soon.

  • This looks pretty interesting, although it looks very similar to Starlight Inception in many regards.

Speaking of Starlight Inception, can we expect a game review yet this week? 😉

      • Escape Hatch are releasing a patch imminently which apparently addresses an awful lot of issues; we are holding off the review until then. No point slating a game if the issues get fixed a week later or so.

Awesome. Gotta be better than starlight.

Why do you say that? Did Starlight let you down? I’m looking forward to reading something about the game so I can make up my mind..I’m actually very close to buying the game. Do you recommend it?

Hopefully TVL will review. It’s basically very, very poor. I haven’t seen anyone say they like the Vita edition, even those who got it for free.

        • When Kyle previewed it back in October he felt that there was a decent game in there somewhere, beset by many issues. Despite the six months since it appears that there are still many issues. Brad is doing our review and he is enjoying aspects of it, but there is too much chaff in the wheat. Given that he also has God of War and Lego Hobbit on the go, he is delaying the Starlight Inception review.

        • vongruetz .

I was in the process of reviewing it when Escape Hatch contacted us to say there was a major new update being done for the game. After reviewing the list of changes they were making, they hit nearly every problem I was having. We decided to hold off on the review until after the patch it out. I don’t think the game is as bad as people are making it out to be. You can get all the fixes coming in the update here:

I can safely say that I am going to lose multiple hours to this game

This game looks awesome. Reminds me of Freelancer on PC where you can just fly around star systems. Console NEEEDS a game like this. I can’t wait.

Looks great! I like that it has both sandbox and story driven elements.

  • This looks pretty cool 😀
