We were sent a link by Vita Plus News on Twitter for a listing for a trademark application. I’m not an expert in this field by any means, but the patent was seemingly filed by Rockstar’s parent company, Take Two Interactive – and the key words are “City Stories”.

The artwork for the filing is from two of the previous handheld entries in the series, Liberty City Stories and Vice City Stories.

Could we be about to see HD Vita versions of the PSP classics, or perhaps even something new? We would love to see anything GTA related on the system and would be a massive deal and boost for the handheld.

Do you think there is anything specific in this? Or just Take Two updating a patent? We have reached out to them for a comment, in the meantime let us know your thoughts (and expectations!) in the comments!

  • Oh boy perfect thing to have for the vita at E3 😀

  • JoeCool

Rockstar did promise something for the Vita back in 2012. Would be EPIC.

    • Rodolfo Ferreira

      Now, this is interesting.
I have been looking for Anything Rockstar-Vita related in the last year. I’ve watched videos, read interviews, tweets, forums posts… articles articles and more articles and some rumors. I didn’t manage to read such a ‘promise’ from Take-Two or even Rockstar themselves!
So where did you read such “promise”?
Do you actually have the link?

The artwork has pretty much been confirmed as fake.

“Professional Photo Shopper here to tell you guys, sorry, but this is fake.

A quick Google search shows us that same picture comes up and is directly from Rockstar’s Website. (http://www.rockstargames.com/newswire/article/49351/liberty-city-stories-and-vice-city-stories-now-available-for-dow.html)

The Rockstar logo in the bottom right hand corner, comes from a quick Google Image Search and is the second image. (Note that whoever made this did forgot to take out small (R) in the bottom right hand corner which is not present in Rockstar Covers)

The “Rating Pending” Logo is also quite easy to find. Again the first Google image result for “Rating Pending” comes up with this. (note that the RP logo is far more compressed and thus becomes blurrier as it has been resized compared with the rest of the image)

The Box itself comes from, again, a quick Google Image Search. Any art could be used have been used. (I just picked Ninja Gaiden as it was among the top results for “PS Vita Game Box”) One would simply need to draw a black box over the existing image. (Additionally, please note how much more consistent the Ninja Gaiden promotional box art is compared to this)

On the top Right hand corner we see the [NTSC V/C] Logo which does not exist on promotional art for video games. Only after games pass certification do they receive this. Moreover, PlayStation Vita games do not receive the logo designation in that place.

What gives this away almost immediately, is the fact that the image is not just blurry, but inconsistent. Particularly the two logos at the bottom, both of which have been clearly re-sized to fit this fake. While the center image remains at a sharper resolution.

The twitter image is much sharper in the original IGN posting, but never the less quite easy to recreate. The background and user picture are copied directly from the official Rockstar’s verified twitter account and one must simply make a fake twitter handle where one or two of the letters in handle are different than Rockstar’s current account handle. They were then Photoshopped back in. The user then simply created a fake tweet and took a photo from their cell phone or camera, uploaded it and posted it on IGN as well as the artwork they created from a separate account.

Lastly I would like to point out the flaw in this research. I am not sure how you came by this information, but the originator of these pictures is two guest accounts off the website IGN.com. Presumably the same person has created two accounts. The first of which happens to be the only person who noticed this posting out of the 2,700,000+ followers of Rockstar games Twitter account. Seems likely, right?

The “second user,” cites a non existing page on Reddit as the source of the information and claims to have, again been the only one to see it. I ask you, which is more likely that two separate people posting within minutes of each other happened to be the ONLY TWO people to find this, or that they are the same person with a Photoshopped fake? Even without analytical knowledge of how Photoshop works or creation of promotional art, the likelihood of this being fake is almost certain.

Please update this site as well as your N4G article accordingly as this is simply encouraging other users to do the same in the future. – Jibbex”

The art floating around has pretty much been confirmed as fake. Found this on another comments section.

Vita could definitely use the help

  • Lester Paredes

While I’d like to see something like a PSP GTA Collection (camera control with right analg stick = dream come true), I sure hope it’s an original game. I’ll take another side story, built from the ground up for vita. Hells yes.

  • Carl

I wish it would be an all-new GTA game, specifically tailored for PS VITA. That kind of game could boost the lovely handheld (unlike that atrocious Call of Duty game at launch). At least Rockstar don’t have a track record of doing shitty HD ports of PSP games or anything like it.

    • Rodolfo Ferreira

An all-new game takes studio resources. I really don’t see R* working hard to deliver Vita fans something new because of the handheld’s “poor sales” (according to IGN). That could be true for the 3DS though.

  • Magnumstache

If Rockstar, the proper studio, did anything for the Vita I’d be delighted.

HD updates of any of the GTA games (other than GTA IV, I thought it was crap), Bully or The Warriors would be good. Some new games in any of their series would be stupendous.

    Magnumstache.

  • Rodolfo Ferreira

Whatever it is I’m pretty sure it’s not a Vita exclusive as Rockstar/Take-Two sees no reason to be tied to a single platform anymore. They want the millions, not the ‘hundreds of thousands’ of sold copies. Those companies are out for money. Real money.
That means the 3DS is going to get it. Maybe even andrioid and ios.
So why would people bother buying a Vita to play a game that runs on their tablet?

The Vita needs a push from Rockstar, for a brand new game or just a PSP HD remake, but in order to sell more Vitas, it has to be exclusive.

    • nonscpo

Actually even if a new game was made cross platform for the 3DS (Hell I’ll even throw in the NVIDIA SHIELD too), the Vita version would sell better as that one would most likely be the deffinitve version of the game. The 3DS may have the install base but its hardware will limit it, and the NVIDIA SHIELD might have the hardware to back it up, however its install base is nowhere close to the Vita for Take-Two to waste their time on maxing out the Hardware.
P.S. Before anyone responds to this comment, take into account Conception II. That game was cross platform and demonstrated that there were limitations to making a game across different Handhelds. Even though the 3DS had the larger install base, and therefore should have been Atlus priority.

  • Anthony Brinklow

    Read Dead Stories?

Its worth remembering DS had a much bigger install base than PSP but gta Chinatown Wars sold atrociously on the system.

  • Dave

This could be the best possible news for the vita in a very long time if it turns out to be a brand new game. There is every possibility that it could happen too as they did make two great games for the psp. I would also love a sequel to chinatown wars, that game was fantastic and I can just imagine how great they could make a game in that semi top down style look on the vita.

  • WhyWai

Devs struggled to bring console quality open world game to VIta (AC:Liberation, Borderlands 2). I hope them make a Chinatown War style GTA game that runs smooth instead!

  • BastianSiv

Follow @VitaNewsPLUS on twitter, he’s the one who spotted it!

  • italodance

Yeah a new GTA game would be awesome and make Vita popular.

  • italodance
  • Mauricio Quintero

If they do another project i hope they do not cut off a big chunk of the map in order to make the game, and I hope that the game will be like Chinatown Wars, that game was really sweet.

    • JonathanisPrimus

This is fake. Notice the odd kerning in the text as well as the NTSC logo on the top right. Handheld games don’t have that.

      • Mauricio Quintero

That would a hell of a job at Photoshoping.

    • Ratatata

      Sorry but this is fake.

      • Mauricio Quintero

I really hope so, I would not want to see this games as the first ones t ocome, but that image looks really convincent for me.

  • Karl Smith

If I think what I think it is which is a true 3D GTA game for the PSVita. Rockstar, shut up and take my money! ^__^
