What a day it has been for me at PAX Prime down in Seattle! I got to see some crazy costumes, a few new games, and even try out a headset – all in all it was a great first day for me, and there’s still things I have yet to check out!

Here’s some quick impressions of a couple games I got to play during my first day of PAX.

Freedom Wars

  • Looks really good graphically.
  • Plays smooth.
  • Quick to understand.
  • Lost connection via ad-hoc.

Freedom Wars was my favorite game to play so far at the convention. I found my self getting the hang of the game awfully quick; as the timer ticked down to zero, I got so nervous – but at the same time I was so ready to take on whatever lay in front of me.

I took out some little enemies with my sword, and then I saw it; the giant abductor was right there, ready for us to start laying all of our attacks on it as a team. Freedom Wars gets you right from the start, and I can’t wait to go back tomorrow and play another round with some more random people!

Check out the video I took below, and I’m sorry for the distance but Sony didn’t want us crowding the screen.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number

  • Familiar gameplay.
  • New unique weapons.
  • A wonderful soundtrack.

Hotline Miami was one of my favorite games to make it to the Vita last year and now the second entry is making it’s journey. Keeping with the same formula from the first, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number seems to be heading in the right direction with some unique weapons and characters.

Minecraft

  • It’s the Minecraft experience in your hands.
  • Occasional frame-rate issues when a lot is loading.
  • Draw distance is poor.
  • Touch controls to cycle through inventory works quick and effectively.

With the couple issues present in Minecraft I can see why 4JStudios might be taking some time to get this one in our hands. I am happy with my time on it (don’t get me wrong!), but I really do hope they fix the frame-rate issues when we get the final version.

Tales of Hearts R

  • Graphically stunning.
  • Runs really smooth.
  • Translation seems to be quite good where I played.
  • Controls really easily

Tales of Hearts R is one of my most anticipated games for the Vita and I was very happy to get my hands on it to see first hand just how well it looked and played. The limited amount of time I got with it, I didn’t notice anything offputting – though I’ll definitely be going back for more!

Check out the video I took below.

There’s still a few days left of PAX, and I still have a lot to check out – so look out for more PAX stuff to go up throughout the weekend!

Tyler Olthoff is a 24 year old who has been gaming since he can remember. In love with almost all types of games, the only type he can't stand (and that's probably because he sucks at it) is fighting games. His favorite genres would have to be shooters, RPGs, and adventure games. He owns almost every new system out there including PS4, PS3, XB1, PSVita and the 3DS, but barely plays any of them as it's mainly his good old Vita getting the attention!

Excellent coverage. You guys really growing and staying on point. Good stuff, Vitabros.

Dude!!! Thank you for the coverage on PAX, and for the footage!

    Keep up the good work!

Freedom Wars and Tales of Hearts R really nice! How many people are there? Is PAX less crowded that GC? Those are hellish experience, I was once on GC and had enough… really…

I get the feeling that PAX will show more stuff than that lame GC that we had. I mean the only big-big thing during GC was Silent Hill (P.T.). And on PAX we are going to see 20 minutes of Type-0.

Some says that it looks like MGS on steroids
And one guy from some chinese page says it looks like next-gen game, that wouldn’t play on Vita.

Either way… if it’s not on Vita, I’m not picking it up. But still I’m curious.

Looking forwards to all these games, Freedom Wars in particular. That said, nobody I know has a Vita – I’ve heard this game gets brutally difficult later in the game. Can I do co-op online and just play with strangers or something?

  • Ernesto Winner

How I wish I was at Pax Prime right now, thanks for the coverage!!

  • Ichigo Yoite

I’m jealous! Thx for sharing your experiences! 😀

  • Robert Backland

Thanks for the coverage. Looking forward to your impressions of the rest of the games. ( if you’re doing any more )

So awesome to hear from Pax, really looking for some gems in there.
