Have you ever wondered why the PSP and PlayStation 3 have themes and the Vita doesn’t? Time to stop worrying about that and start worrying about what theme to pick.

That’s right folks; announced at the pre-TGS Sony keynote, it looks like firmware version 3.30 will bring themes to the mix! These themes include background pictures, icons for the default apps and livescreen music to alter the look of your PlayStation Vita.

Announced themes include;

  • Danganronpa
  • Freedom Wars (check out a low-res screen here)
  • Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines
  • Phantasy Star Nova

This update hasn’t been dated, but likely isn’t set to drop too far into the future – so keep an eye out 😉

I wonder about price of those! But those looks great! Both Freedom Wars and danganronpa.

  • So cool! Freedom Wars you’re mine!

In my opinion this comes a little too late. Themes should’ve been there since day one, or at least when people started to make “themes” on their own, sony should’ve made something officially and more professional back then.

I honestly don’t think this will do much good, nor the “Live from playstation” app for that matter.

When it comes from Sony and their Vita Treatment, better late than never.

If they want to get people attention to the PS Vita then change the entire OS GUI and match it with the PS4, then I’m pretty sure they will get people attention.

        They’d regain mine.

I think that neither the Vita or PS4 UI/UX experiences are good. in fact, the PS4 interface is my least favorite part about it. There so many inconsistencies with the layout and menu flow. If you mean that the Vita and PS4 should share similar aesthetics, then I would agree with you there. But as of now, they both need a lot of work. Themes aren’t gonna help that.

Heh Kyle, how many times did you spot my comments asking myself why was it that the consoles had so many themes featured on PSN updates and the Vita didn’t have at least one? I started investigating it and as soon as I discovered it was due to the lack of support, I couldn’t believe it.. a 2yr old+ handheld with no theme support. Glad to see this changing in the near future.
Speaking of near, was there anything near-related at the conference? I’d like to see something, even ‘stability fixes’ for the app. Additionally they could have announced they’re looking into some Vita memory card improvements. Lets face it, it’s too damn slow for an expensive card. A firmware update that doubles the read speed would be more than welcomed.

Is today just the hypest day or something. I don’t understand… Did my birthday come early.

isn’t it there only so limited thing you can change with a theme on Vita?
only wallpaper and the default app’s icons… would be awesome if we can theme other game’s icon as well like android phones.

Great! Give me a Killzone: Mercenary theme and I’ll be a happy man.
