Double Fine Productions is set to bring Day of the Tentacle: Special Edition to PlayStation Vita next year.

Originally released for Mac OX and DOS in ’93, Day of the Tentacle is a point-and-click adventure game where the player takes control of three different characters (Bernard, Hoagie and Laverne) to solve puzzles while using time travel to explore different historical events. The antagonist of the title is the evil Purple Tentacle, for which the game is obviously named.

Here’s a screenshot from the original to give you an idea of the game’s styling;

Details are scarce as to how the remaster will alter the title, though I’m sure a fresh coat of paint will be in the cards at the least. As for a release date, it seems I’m getting conflicting reports – though the majority seem to say “undated 2015” at this point.

    great news!’ now give us ‘maniac mantion’ and ‘Zak McKracken’!

      That would be nice idea… those games are old enough to really apreciate a remake version of them.

      I mean… Day of Tentacle is from… 94 or 93 right? But it is quite detailed for its times. A remake will look more or less very similar to original version. But in case of those two titles they would have to make them from the scratch. Totally redesign them… that way even people who already played it would feel like playing something new.

    I had that game. I remember it being pretty funny

    oh I never played this one but a lot of people have told me over the years that it is a great game and I think I should close that gap in my personal video game history.

    Always wanted to play this. Now I can and wherever I want!

  • Never had the chance to play this game before so I’ll definitely pick it up for the Vita.

    What is up with all these old games getting ported to Vita? Its like there trying to give everyone who didn’t play them a second chance!

    • Phelan

      Yeah… well but I just don’t see a point in doing this.

      Most of those game are considered as abandonwear… yeah downloading them from legal point of view is still something bad… but in reality there is no side which would still hold rights to those titles (I doubt that Disney hold right to LucasArts games)

      And it’s just point&click game… no matter what they do with it… the experience from playing it will be exactly the same.

      I love Day of Tentacle… but sadly… as I know this game too well I would just beat it in one hour. Even without walktrough I know exaclty where to do go, what to pick up, how to combine things… and where to use them… I’m just like that stupid hamster frozen in time and space.

      Though… frankly speaking… I’d love to see a full remake of Legend of Kyrandia.

      Anyway… if someone didn’t play it yet.. you better not miss it this time.
