Early footage of Carnivore Studio‘s upcoming survival horror title Kodoku has been released, giving us a glimpse into how the game looks and feels.

Carnivore Studio were keen to add that the footage shows ‘lots of temporary things running in the game (I’ll find some time to implement proper font rendering, I swear), but that will give you an idea of the visual result in game.

The game is set on an abandoned island called Kodoku and you play as a collector who travels there in search of a rare book. This island is haunted by paranormal entities from Japanese mythology and you will need to discover the source of this paranormal activity to escape the island. Whilst you are doing this and searching for the rare book you will have to gather documents so that you can prove the ghosts are real.

Unlike most games in the survival horror genre, there are no guns in Kodoku, with spells the preferred method of defence. You will create these using a crafting system and then use them to help you solve puzzles and distract enemies so that you can sneak past. Aside from the puzzles you will need to ensure your sneaking skills are up to scratch as the rest of the game focuses on stealth. There is a mechanic in the game that will allow for you to focus your senses so that you can detect exactly where the threats are – with hiding in the shadows and listening being the key to your success when playing.

It has also been announced that Carnivore Studio are planning to publish a comic book to complement Kodoku. You can check out the early screens from the comic below alongside the footage of the game. Be sure to keep an eye on The Vita Lounge for more news on this intriguing title as it becomes available.
