Square Enix has revealed some new information on the characters and battle system for new upcoming RPG Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna.

Kuon was a mysterious traveller exploring the world, but after visiting the village she became a soldier for the escort group. The group is escorting the sacrifice Setsuna. Kuon is trusted by the villagers, and is adored as a sister by Setsuna. She has a strong sense of responsibility and duty.

Yomi is an experienced swordsman who was an escort for a previous sacrifice. He can be overly cheerful, and is thought to be a fool by everyone in the Garrison. He has a lot of experience so others in the escort group turn to him for advice. He considers Setsuna’s safety to be his number one priority just as he did the previous sacrifice.

The game will feature an Active Time Battle (ATB) system which has been based on Chrono Trigger’s ATB 2.0 battle system. When your ATB gauge is full you can take action. If several characters’ ATB gauges are filled then you can pick which character acts first.

Using the Setsuna, or “Moment System” you’ll have to consider the timing of your attacks to give yourself the advantage in battle. By performing an action, receiving damage, or letting time pass after the ATB gauge reaches its MAX state, the circular Setsuna gauge will increase.

When the Setsuna gauge is filled up additional effects are triggered when you time attacks correctly. You can inflict additional damage with standard attacks and some attack techniques.

Depending on the technique, there are a variety of results you can expect to happen, such as duplicating an attack, receiving healing effects, or dealing critical damage.

Ikenie to Yuki no Setsua is due out in Japan on February 18th, with no word yet on a Western localization.

Easily one of next year’s must have games!

I don’t like the character models but it still looks nice. Kinda like a classic retro RPG.
