Today Eclipse Games announced the release date of their upcoming 2D side scroller, Spheroids. The game is scheduled to come out on January 10th for PS Vita and PS4 (cross-buy!).

According to the game’s description on Steam Greenlight, “Spheroids is a 2D sidescroller that mixes mechanics from classic platformers such as Super Mario Bros or Umihara Kawase with ‘combat’ sections inspired in Pang! (or Buster Brothers), within a comical science-fiction setting inspired by films and series such as Futurama, Rick & Morty, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future or Spaceballs.”

Spheroids starts you in control of Lucas, a jumpy, introverted, Canadian boy, currently on his way to Otto’s garage. Otto is a brilliant but paranoiac scientist that’s spent years trying to uncover a conspiracy to hide the existence of alternative universes. Turns out he was right, as the world now currently faces an unprecedented spherical invasion. It’s now up to Lucas to stop these dangerous aliens and save the world.

The game has a story mode with 32 levels in 8 different locations.

As far as this Vita stalwart is concerned, you can never have too many 2D platformers!

Yeah, I kinda felt the same way when I first looked at it. I just assumed that they were supposed to stick out due to the nature of the story, but it does still seem a bit weird looking. To me the Spheroids look like stickers layered on top of the screen rather than something actually meant to be in the game.

I too am really digging the Pang elements! Will be excited to see how that meshes with 2D side scrolling and Umihara Kawase aspects (I’ve never played it, but from what I’ve seen it looks cool).

I kind of agree, but you’re right, more platformers the better in my book! They do look a little out of place, but it certainly doesn’t bother me at all. I absolutely loved Pang on the Amiga. Add in the extra gameplay elements and I’m sold 🙂 Good job Eclipse Games 🙂
