Ever wondered if a Vita could survive space travel?

Funktronic Labs and Curve Digital celebrated today’s launch of sci-fi adventure game Nova-111 by sending a copy of the game on a PlayStation Vita into space. The Vita and game were sent soaring more than 36,000 meters above the Earth attached to a helium balloon, all whilst being filmed by a GoPro camera.

The footage from the space launch was compiled together by the team at Curve into a video which culminates in a shot of Nova on the PlayStation Vita hovering between the Sun and the Earth’s Ozone layer. After a five-hour journey, the Vita landed safely in a swamp on the outskirts of Norwich - in perfect working order. You can see the full video here:

“We created the first indie game ever to be sent into space, how freakin awesome is that?” said Eddie Lee, Co-founder of Funktronic Labs. “This is a culmination of two years’ work for us so we wanted to celebrate the release of the game in style with the Curve guys. Watching the footage back is truly magical and I’m really proud of what we achieved with the game. ”

Nova-111 is a quirky sci-fi adventure game set in space that utilises an interesting in-game mechanic in which players must manipulate both turn-based strategy and real time gameplay to fight alien creatures and solve puzzles. Players must take control of the research vessel Nova and explore space to save 111 of the world’s greatest minds after the biggest scientific experiment in the universe goes horribly wrong.

“We have had a fantastic time working with Eddie and Kalin over the last year and the footage that the GoPro captured was incredible. I was a little disappointed that no aliens stopped by for a quick play through, though.” adds Rob Clarke, senior marketing manager, Curve Digital. “This project has been a labour of love from both Curve and Funktronic Labs so we really hope people enjoy it.”

Nova-111 is available now on Playstation 4, Playstation Vita, Playstation 3 and Steam (PC/Mac). The Xbox One version will release this Friday 31 st August and the Wii U version will be coming later this year. The game will be £11.99/€14.99 with a 20 per cent launch discount offer across all formats.

Makes sense, the original PlayStation CPU is in New Horizons.

I thought I had broken my Vita once by spilling water all over it but after a couple of days of being left alone in a bag of rice, she was as good as new. It feels like a pretty sturdy console.
