    Details:

Weapon System: 2 Weapons and the Thorn

    http://www.jp.playstation.com/scej/title/freedomwars/001/system/

    http://gematsu.com/2014/04/freedom-wars-trailer-introduces-weapon-categories
    http://www.siliconera.com/2014/04/24/freedom-wars-six-different-weapon-types/

You can choose two primary weapons but only use one at a time. Load out combinations of melee-ranged, melee-melee or ranged-ranged are allowed.

    Close Range Weapons:

While there are only 3 main categories announced so far, each sub type have a slightly varied move-set including different charge attacks.

e.g. not all Small/Light Swords use the same, exact moveset.

"Small/Light Swords/Stilleto" - Fast attacking. Allows manual dismemberment.

"Large/Great Swords/Sword" - Slower but hits heavier and has wider damage arc. You can change the direction of your attack while charging up a Light Attack.

"Spear" - Vaulting attacks, spin-dashes attacks and more. Can be thrown by charging a Light Attack.

    Ranged Weapons:

"Personal Carrying Fireams" - Rapid firing, able to attack while clinging onto a surface or an Abductor.

"Multi-purpose Firearms" - High damage, low capacity.

"Squad/Team Support Firearms" - Special weapons but heavily dampens player mobility.

    Thorn Features:

    • Traversal; you can use the Thorn to grab onto surfaces and dash into them. This is known as a Thorn Dive. You can also perform ground dashes by Thorn Diving onto floor surfaces.
    • Cling onto walls or certain enemies while simultaneously attacking.
    • Get to higher surfaces for an advantage
    • Aerial Attacks
    • Revive Allies
    • Incapacitate enemies multiple ways
    • Unique Skills per type (color coded)
    • Upgrade/Growth System
    • Grab certain items from a distance.

Combat Consumables, Cover and Rescue Orientation

Other than the primary weapons and Thorn, you can carry a few consumable items like med-kits, land mines, sticky grenades and more.

There is also a very simple/barebone cover mechanic against torso-height barricades/sandbags that scattered across certain maps.

There will be missions where it isn't necessary to completely destroy Abductors but instead makes the rescue of civilians a priority.

    Enemies: Human/oids, Small Synthetics, Abductors

    Human/oids:

While there are alliances forming among Panopticons, there are also rival city-states.

    Abductors (non-official names):

    Humanoid Type

There will be "Barebones" (no attachments), Ranged (Vulcan/Missile Launcher attachements) and Shield types (posted above). Has a single civilian/prisoner cage (chest).

    Rabbit Type:

This can carry up to three civilians/prisoners (two in chest, one on back).

    Cannon Type:

    These can also have attachments.

    Dragon Type:

For as much as this games been pumped up and advertised (at least in Japan I guess), for it to have a price tag of $30 amazes me.

    Abductor Picking Up Something?

    8:53 in Youtube Vid

Check the last few moments before the Abductor's arm get's dismembered.

There's something that the Abductor tried to get a hold of and even generated a shadow. I'm guessing it's either a railing or a cement barricade.

It would be interesting if armed humanoid Abductors are capable of picking up certain environmental objects thus adding something to the combat dynamic

    Room Upgrades?

    http://gematsu.com/2014/01/freedom-wars-due-japan-summer#RGAurzeCLR2Tcc3m.99

I guess this could be just a room "upgrade" for/from the Story campaign only (maybe similar to GE:B). I hope not.

I hope we can furnish our own rooms once we get to a higher Code.

Interestingly enough, we can get some interesting rewards that hopefully can be used for room furnishing (not sure if it has a 3d model) if you observe Siliconera's Taipei Video carefully.

Screenshot above (hidden in spoiler tag):

    Small Abductor Parts Falling Off

I've seen several occasions where there are some small Abductor parts that fall onto the ground and can be picked up. These seem different from the parts that you manually try to dismember.

Also the Humanoid Abductor's design is pretty interesting. It's actually an eye with lashes.

Check the "lower eyelid". It's not there anymore. I've seen it getting picked up on Taipei's game convention press-con demo (Where the producer was the one who's showing the demo).

I've noticed Rabbit Types drop weird 8-shaped discs also (from their thin torso).

    _____________________________________________________________
Just hope the 5K Yen/30 U$D pricing doesn't mean Sony skimped on content (campaign length, enemy and stage variety).

It's also possible they'll be doing the PJD f VITA model where the game itself is $ 30 but there are some DLC content "offered". The PS3 version (PJD F) had all the content (songs and some bonuses) and AFAIK was $ 50.

It could also mean Sony is just being aggressive with the pricing since there might arguably be plenty of competition/indirect competition or Sony's trying to appease some potentially negative reaction if they're planning to release a "ver 1.5" sooner (like RO to RO:A, SS to SS:D). Maybe something like Freedom Wars to "Freedom Wars: Panopticon".

    We'll see.

Still, if they may be skimping on some then that just means $ 30 can still be a fair price.

Lots of mechanics and weapons but I think it's too early to tell whether it'll have quite some enemy and environmental variety.

    What we've seen so far:

    Abductors:

Humanoid Type (parts can be swapped, has arms)
Rabbit Head Type (parts can be swapped)
Cannon Type (parts can be swapped)
    Dragon Type
    Tiger Type

    Small Synthetics:

    Orb with Cannon
    Orb with Blades

    Human/oid Types (my speculation):

    Enemy NPC and Accessories

    .. I don't think that's a lot.

Environment (some will have day/night stages):

    Desert Map
Dilapidated City Map (confirmed to have day/night/rain)
Inside Panopticon Maps (There's at least two shown)

Don't get me wrong. I am not saying those would be everything but IMO, so far.. it could use more enemies and stages.

The release is a few weeks a way and I would say there's a possibility of a huge info blow out in the last few weeks/days before release.

    We'll see.

Thanks! I'm guessing they'll be doing more of that once it gets closer to Western release tho.

I'm actually somewhat afraid of getting burnt out already.. but I can't stop it! :(

Some of my info are kinda speculation tho and not full announcements (like Color Coded Thorns, Unique Skills per Thorn Type).

I just hope this game gets a sequel or at least the "ver 1.5" like most of the recent Hunting-Action games.

Please let us use an Abductor, at least one per team/human squad!! It matches the theme and CG trailer! :p

    Great work on the OT!

I'm a little scared that the game will be too easy from the videos I have seen. I Think that assumption could be based on the unlimited ammo from the firearms in the videos (do we know anything about how the ammo-system work in the game?). I wish for the weapons like the rocket launcher to not break the game and that the firearms don't deal too much damage (so the focus is on melee combat). I also hope that the enemies/bosses are well animated and feel like they are animals more than robots. In the "volunteer 01" video the animations looks a little stiff to my taste but that might just be that particular monster and to be honest that is the only monster we have seen (not counting the "panopticon robots" (they all have the panopticon logo/the eye in their design) that I get the feeling are more for practice for the convicted). I hope that firearms work in the same way as the pistols in devil may cry and by that I mean that I hope they are made to contribute to the feeling that you are still in combat even when you are at a distance from the ememy but without dealing any major damage.

I would also like the bosses to have some kind of shields that forces ppl to cooperate instead of everyone just keeps on buttonmashing on their part of the boss. I want the players I play with to be useful in more ways than getting the hp down faster.

what are your hopes and thoughts about the game?

Edit: I also don't want any invincible frames on the dodge roll to add more of a risk/reward to the dodge and force me to use the thorn whip to get out of danger if the situation gets critical and I have to get out of there as quickly as possible.

Edit 2: I have watched all the videos again and it seems like you don't have any i-frames on dodge roll and that the firearms don't do too much damage:)

So if the attack and movement animations on monsters turn out to be varied and good this could really be the game that I have been waiting for.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Freedom Wars online mode will be added post-release in the form of a patch yes? And I believe God Eater 2 did the exact same thing, and it only just got their online mode very recently. It was released way back in October too.

Starting to head into this very icky territory with this concept of delivering a very major feature months after the original product was released, when it was something promised long before release. Now I understand online play isn't as important in Japan, which is maybe the one territory they could get away with that sort of thing. If they did that here though Sony would get their balls strung up, and quite rightfully so too.

What if Sony or Namco or any other company for that matter shuts down the studio making a game when they were due to issue a major feature, and a promised feature post release? Maybe the game flops or the publisher needs to make immediate cutbacks It won't happen with Freedom Wars since it's Sony in-house development, but that doesn't stop it becoming a worrying trend.

    Anyway, EX Troopers+Monster Hunter=Freedom Wars=Me excited.

No. Ammos are limited. Watch carefully. It's using a traditional bullet system but I am 99% confident that there are environmental "pick ups" that refill them.

So far the damage of ranged weapons/guns seem weak. There's actually an HP bar of the enemy and it doesn't seem to do much even the mini-gun.

As for difficulty, I guess there'll be missions where you'll have to face 3 at the same time.. yes, they look dumb but their hard hitting... 3 Abductors running amok IMO would still be PITA unless you find some glitches to abuse.

I agree. The koushin/tiger looks pretty bad specially when it was running straight toward its enemies. I personally don't expect any or much improvement with this first iteration's animation. I am still trying to get over the running animation of the players. The upper body looks so awkward (torso tucked too deep/etc.)

Yes. There is a shield type Abductor (posted in the 1st post in Enemies section). As far as cooperation can potentially go, this can have a very unique take. What other action games on the VITA makes the escort strategy viable? That's a first for a handheld IMO; provide cover fire and distraction while I transport the Civilian to safety.

This may not be the game for you or at least this 1st iteration. I highly doubt they'd be doing much more on those fronts. Maybe you might want to consider that it's a relatively cheap game (5K yen/30 USD).

Thoughts? I see more people bashing the game's animation, content, enemy variety, possible online rubber banding, glitches including visual, and possibly crappy "PVP" because we may be fighting against Ghost Avatars of players from other countries or state instead of real time.

I also see people whining about the Thorn's velocity (1 speed/delay regardless of distance), rescue/escort missions are horrid and boring, anime aesthetic is stupid and edgy; "resources are scarce but not hair stylists, hair gel and headphones!".. "So oppressed but children are running around with fancy clothes!). Cliche animu story.

Ahh! Also repetitiveness.. it's so repetitive because there are no farming/fishing/bug-catching/cooking/sharpening/etc.

"Physics sucks" because you are agile. People want more weight, penalty heavy movements and a stamina bar.

A lot will probably say it's another MH clone even though that's mostly skin-deep or maybe even an AoT knock-off.. maybe even GE knock off.

    Maybe load times too.

I also see people complaining about the controls. It's too ambitious and complicated for the limited controls. You can't run, aim and shoot.. all three simultaneously.

Oh! and AI.. people are gonna bash the AI.

Quite negative really.. but I see potential and it's something I'm looking forward to the most on the VITA right now. Probably as "AAA" as it gets for 2014 other than ports.

    http://www.siliconera.com/2014/03/18/freedom-wars-hits-japan-june-will-online-multiplayer-launch/

Yeah. I still think that the US will get a version with online. JPN as beta grounds for that. Not a big deal IMO.

I guess that's an issue but I don't think that'll happen with these games but yeah.. disasters happen anywhere/anyhow/anytime.

Kinda. I've always said (on major boards out there) as:

    GE + LP x Modifications = FW

    GE:

    Animu
    Story
    Pseudo switching
    "3rd element"/God Arc
    Cosmetic wear

    +

    LP:

    Grappling
    Weapon Switching
    Traditional Bullet System
    "Lumbering" w/ huge weapons
    PVP

    x

    Modifications:

    No-rideable mechs/Abductors
    Barebone Cover
    Rescue Orientation
    Aerial Dash Attacks
Sub weapon categories with different moveset
    Direct Command AI partner
    Voice Edit AI partner
    Dismemberment emphasis

    EDIT:

Come to think of it.. the AI + girth/height/etc customization might be viewed as something from Dragon's Dogma? Hmm maybe Capcom is very influential xD

I might have been a little unclear with my intentions. I did not mean to bash the game, his is one of my most anticipated games and I like most of the things that I have seen. What I was doing was nitpicking the details and writing how I would like the game to work in some places were I didn't know.

Your answer was verry informative and I really appreciate that you took the time to answer my questions.

I was making assumption from the weapons video were they have unlimited ammo just to show the weapons off, I went back and looked at some of the other videos and in them it was clear that it was
limited (but not how to get more)

and the stages they have showed are probably early on in the game as well (talking about the longer videos from some japanese shows).

I also hadn't noticed that the the video in wich they fight against the tiger have cuts in it and the person actually dies one or two times in it, but gets saved by the AI partner.

I also remember one thing that I noted the first time I saw the first video of the game and that is that while the player have saved a civilian and are running towards the extraction the abductor (walking on four legs) is hunting the player. Some of the other players use their whips to make the abductor turn the wrong way in a when it's trying to turn aroud a corner.

I remember that I was concerned about the animations in KZ:m when they first showed gameplay (every enemy fell back and to the left), but that turned out great in the final product and I think that animations may be the last thing to correct in a game so I think there is a chance of the animations to look/blend a little better. The animation I would like them to focus on correcting is in wich direction an abductor will fall
based on where the whip/whips are connected. This is such a small detail, but one that I think will feel amazing if they fix it.

Oh, I had missed the shielded one.

I definetely think it's a game for me, I bought and have had a lot of fun with both soul sacrifice and Toukiden (also bought Delta a couple of days ago but haven't had time to play it yet).

I dont understand why it is so cheap. It is made by well known studios, it have been under developement for a couple of years (think I read it on sciliconera), it has all these systems going on and a built in voice synthesizer. To me it doesn't sound like a cheap game to make at all. Couldn't the price just be a strategy or do you think that it actually will be a "smaller"game?

I played through Jak and epic mickey 2, loved batman blackgate, own dokidoki universe, enjoy starlight inception, gow coll. and dustforce and will buy borderlands 2 day one. I don't care if people are bashing a game if I think that it is something that I will enjoy. What I ment by thoughts was what your hopes for the game are and wich questions you would like to ask the developers.

    [RANT]
I dont understand how so many games can be called monster hunter clones. To me this is as irritating as reviewers who can tell if a game is native res or if it's running in 30 or 60fps, but expects that ports on a handheld should run like on PC and are unable to see that KZ:m and borderlands 2 are in different genres.[/RANT]

Edit: The things I like the most from what I've seen from the game are it's art direction, the traversal, weapon impact, text to speech and character custamization posibilities. I am also excited for the the location based system even though I don't really understand how it will work.

I am sorry if I sounded aggressive. I wasn't trying to be snide. I literally mean that people will be bashing the games with the reason I posted. Those weren't really directed at you just my thoughts on negative angles I've thought of at the time of posting.

Good point. It would be awesome if the Abductor fell into different poses depending on the part that got pulled or falling closer to whom has pulled the hardest.

As for pricing: Post # 5:

    ___________________________________

As for MH Clones, I've only chatted someone up on the forum, the single person who didn't intend to use it to condescend. He just didn't know what to call the game but kinda reasoned that it was the metric where he'll get a quick understanding of the game's point (large mobs, loot, arena-mission based, 3rd person action with rpg elements).

Most of the time tho, it seems to be used to bash the VITA's library or tease the userbase that wanted MH on it.

IMO/TBF, a lot of VITA's mp-ja/rpgs / hunting-action may have been made because developers and investors wanted to capitalize on MH's success and making their version or something with similar template specially after a hole was left in Sony's portable.

PSO seems to have come first but I guess some see that it's MH that directly caused the recent boom/variety of the genre. AFAIK, MH3U and MH4 eclipses PSO2 in Japan in terms of pushing full priced retail units.

I used to prefer native res before but now I want variety. I'd like some devs to do native and some do reasonably sub-native.

Have a feeling FW will be sub-native.. maybe dynamic (to native) at best.

He'll I'd pay $ 80 for a full DA:O Ultimate Ed. VITA (touch screen/backbad functions) with stable ~27 - 30 FPS, SD resolution 16:9 (like NFS:MW), 4X AA, Native res UI and text, compressed audio, PS2 geometry and textures, blob shadows, etc.

Thanks for the comprehensive reply! :D Appreciate it ;)

Just had to post in here to say great job on the Opening post Tubers. Content packed with lots of useful information. Freedom Wars is probably my most sought after Sony 1st party game. God Eater Burst has left a big itch, being able to get this relatively soon, compared to waiting around forever for God Eater 2, is nice.

Let us hope for a full bioware collection ;)

I watched the 11min tutorial video again and I really like that it seems like a pretty complex game (had forgotten about mines and bombs). I just saw the human enemies in the OP and was thinking that maybe they are the main targets for the firearm weapons. I also noted that the game uses both square and triangle, do you think the weapons will have more combos than are showed in the weapons video?

Do we know if there are longer combos in the game (this is something I missed when i started playing Soul sacrifice, but soon realised wasn't needed), I have just started playing the GOW coll. and the combo system in those games are no less than fantastic IMO (perfect balance of risk/reward). Do we know anything about upgrading the characters?

@tubers Do you read/speak japanese, if so is there somethings in the tutorial that they just talk about but don't show?

Does anyone know if any of the releases will have English subtitles? Yes I know the game is confirmed for the US but I'm impatient and want to do videos of the game and i will re-buy anyway.

The Asian Chinese version has been pushed back to August on Playasia but the Asian Japanese version hasn't. Both versions mention nothing about English subtitles.

People have been saying on forums that an Asian version will have English subtitles but it's not clear which one and nowhere seems to of officially stated this on pre-orders. There are two Asian versions on Playasia, one pushed back until August and one still for June.

So my questions is will any version have English subtitles and If so can someone tell me which version it is with a link if possible please?

I'm looking forward to activating my DEMO code a week before the release date, I'm excited for this game :)

There's no official word yet. And when there is, I can assure you Play-Asia will absolutely blast it from the main-page banner, as a lot of their customers are from the Americas and Europe.
But yeah, nothing yet. And even then, you've got to be careful. Like the upcoming Vita title, Sword Art Online, has been 'confirmed' with English subs for the Asia version, but it's unclear yet how much of the game is english-subbed. Ragnarok Oddysey also had this 'English confirmed!' announcement, except only portions of the game, particularly the menus and not story, were in English.

Be careful with those announcements. Not only wait for a retailer like Play-Asia to list it, but also wait for gameplay videos also.

Not sure where you got your information from about Ragnarok Odyssey but i imported it and also ROA and all text including story is in English :)

I have imported a few games in Japanese so i don't mind but if any English option is available I'm going to go for it, even if it's partial.

Sword Art Online has been officially confirmed for full English subtitles as far as I know, I'm not worried about that one. Got it pre-ordered.

I doubt the firearms are mainly for humanoids. They're for anything. Sorry that I can't remember the exact video but it was already shown that Players can dive-attack towards other player sized npcs/human/oids.

Definitely more combos than what was shown but to how much more I am not sure of:

"When you’ve got the melee weapon equipped, square and triangle are your light and heavy attack buttons, respectively. Similar to Dynasty Warriors, the triangle button heavy attack changes depending on how many square button attacks you perform prior to hitting triangle. For instance, after performing four quick slashes with the square button, hitting triangle will activate an attack that looks similar in spirit to Ken’s Shinryuken in Street Fighter."

In the Weapons Video, they haven't shown certain moves of the Spear; spin-dash, air-vertical spin, uncharged pole-vault, aerial light attack, dash-down-from air -attack, spear throw (light attack charge). All of those can be seen in other videos and mostly from the 11 minute tutorial.

The only thing I am almost sure of is that the Thorn will have a growth/upgrade system. As for character levels, I don't have any details but I doubt that.

While the game seems to have some varied melee moveset, I don't think the game will be too close to GoW (of w/c I am recently playing on my VITA) specially if you upgrade Krato's moveset to the max.

Kinda bummed that it seems the Stilleto/Short/Light-Blade are the only main category that allows manual dismemberment.

I think there will also be a Fist category.

    Sadly, I can't read JPN :(

Are you the real GGK?! Awesome! Been a subscriber for a while. Keep it up. I'll be watching your FW vids.. I'll be waiting for the NA localization :p
