Ok, i've been meaning to do this for quite a few years now, but never got around to it due to plowing all my collecting money into vita/ps4/switch

I want to start a megadrive collection from scratch. Not a complete one... just all the games i owned or borrowed as a kid for nostalgia. It'll be a slow work in progress

Here's the list, although i may remember a few others as i go along (its been a long time)

    OWNED
    - Sonic
    - mega games 1 (columns, super hang on, italia 90 football)
    - streets of rage
    - mortal kombat
    - castle of illusion
    - flashback - GOT
    - ghostbusters
    - jurassic park
    - micro machines
    - desert strike - GOT
    - bubsy
    - Michael jackson moonwalker
    - space harrier - GOT

    PLAYED/RENTED
    - sonic 2
    - sonic spinball
    - sonic 3d
    - marble madness - GOT
    - doom
    - toejam and earl
    - lion king
    - bomberman
    - crash test dummies
    - world of illusion
    - streets of rage 2
    - jungle strike - GOT

    OTHER GAMES
    - Mercs - GOT
    - Urban strike - GOT

Any other must have games i might want to add? Are any of the above ridiculously hard to obtain nowadays

I sold all my mega drive shit a while back. One game I loved the most was rocket knight adventures. I had lion king and streets of rage 2 as well... should’ve kept all that stuff. I always regret selling

The Megadrive is great to collect for. Most of the everyday fun games are pretty decent prices if you're diligent. I'll have a proper read when I get home.

Kinda a shame you're going for a PAL collection, I might've been able to help with the NA one thanks to estarland.

I highly recommend Contra: Hard Corps, Castlevania Bloodlines, Megaman 1-3 Collection and Battletoads Vs. Double Dragon.

I think the most expensive will be Ghostbusters. Streets of Rage 2 / Bomberman maybe 20 each, give n take. The others should be less than that by some margin. Except those that zodaex mentioned, they're expensive!

Doom was a 32x game, I'd pass on that.

    I'd recommend:

    Alien 3
    Alisia Dragoon
    Chiki Chiki Boys
    Fire Shark
    Ghouls n Ghosts
    Golden Axe 2
    Micro Machines 96
    Power Rangers: The Movie
    NHL 94
    PGA 2
Quackshot (can get a double pack with Castle of Illusion)
Robocop Vs The Terminator (buy it!)
    Two Crude Dudes
    Vectorman
    Wiz n Liz
    World of Illusion

Even any of those are reasonable prices and will provide tons of fun for the price. If you're going for nostalgia I'd definitely get what you want first tho.

Awesome! Thanks for the tips. All prices are quite reasonable on the scale of things then.

When you say doom is 32x, what do you mean? I vaguely remember playing it on a megadrive 2 at a friends house.... or maybe i am getting that wrong

In my opinion, nothing beats a model 1 genesis. The sound quality never sounded quite right on the later revisions.

100% ditto above. Model 1 all the way. The model 2 tend to have crap sound which is definitely obvious side by side.

Plus a good scart rgb cable from retrogamingcables.co.uk or somewhere like that.

Many thanks, you wouldn't say any of these modern consoles with wireless controllers and built in games are any good?

In my opinion it's not worth the tradeoff of dealing with substandard emulation just for the benefit of HDMI, out, wireless controllers and built in rescaling. To each his own though.

Its not the emulation i was going for at all really. I wanted the physical games as a collection and the console i was looking at on argos website includes a cartridge port.... unless that is for show.

Would you just recommend a 1st generation mega drive all the way?

I have a Retro Freak console which plays basically everything and the MD it emulates very well but its expensive. You can plug in your old controllers too which is useful as the one it comes with isn't great. Are you trying to go the HDMI route?

Whatever gives me the best experience overall really, i'm guessing the hdmi route improves the picture quality?

On a new lcd tv definitely, but if you have space for an older crt tv then an original console n scarts the way you go.

I wish I were like you, discovering such a huge platform of fantastic games. Nice one on picking up all 3 Strike games. When they start arriving you'll have to post some pics!

Flashback arrived, but i have no console yet. It was a RSPCA listing on ebay that hadn't been tested, but i figured i'd take the risk and call it a charitable donation if it doesn't work lol

Looks tidy mate. Games usually do work but Id invest in some ear buds and some isopropyl alcohol to clean the contacts. Sometimes they need a good doing. Looks good tho! First of many!

I've been reading up on these modern flash consoles and it turns out they guve a bad experience for cartridge games as well as the emulation... disappointing.

If i get a Mk1 console, what adaptors do i need to plug it into a more modern LCD screen? I have a scart port, and the one where you can put the 3 colours directly into the TV. Sorry if the above sounds completely ignorant

Also, i remeber playing a few good side scrolling schmups as a kid, but can't remember the names of any. Are there any schmups you would recommend?

    A few of the musts

    Steel Empire
    Tatsujin
    Thunderforce (any of them)
    Gynoug

The only one you need though is Hellfire one of the finest shooters ever produced.

    :)

They look tidy mate. Great start! I love having a collection of the games that mean the most to me. My Megadrive stuff I'd never sell. They're not my originals but like you I worked to build them up and now they too mean something to me.

I can't really suggest anything cost effective that will make the original scart look better on an lcd. The resolutions are miles part. Native res the Megadrive would be a postcard size display on your 40in probably. Scaling that up is a tough job. You can pay 300+ for a good upscaler that will look great but it's a lot of money. Id just suggest picking up a 14in silver Sony Trinitron crt. They look great and they re quite compact to fit somewhere. Other than that, bare minimum would be a good RGB scart cable. I don't have a large lcd so I don't know how it'll look tho. Pass on the red white n yellow cable (composite) that'll suck. I've only got 2% battery on my phone but I might upload a vid on some games to give you some encouragement!

I've also got a spare Mega Games 1 (no manuals tho) that you can have free if you want. If you want all your games complete don't worry I wont be offended. Might have others too.
